Ska-J: la J, perchè?
La J sta per "jazz" in quanto noi curiamo il connubio tra ritmiche afrojamaicane e armonie e arrangiamenti jazz. Vogliamo così riproporre la contaminazione musicale che è il principio della musica jazz e riportare alla dimensione "danzereccia" delle grandi orchestre della metà del secolo scorso.
Avete una line-up piuttosto ricca: come fate ad andare tutti d'accordo?
Abbiamo questo progetto comune e ognuno si adopera nelle proprie possibilità. Probabilmente c'è anche il fatto che abbiamo una cultura superiore e una sensibilità che ci impedisce di avere comportamenti da rockstar.
Descrivete il vostro ultimo album.
E' un disco molto elegante nella scelta dei brani, raffinato nella cura degli arrangiamenti, vario nei generi e nelle voci dei cantanti. Anche la confezione è sicuramente al di sopra della media.
Raccontateci le emozioni e i colori che percorrono l'album.
Sono emozioni e colori un po' antichi di quelli che si usavano prima dell'avvento della musica cazzara di adesso. I nostri arrangiamenti ricchi di sezioni fiati, l'utilizzo dell'organo hammond ricordano molto gli anni 50 quelli in cui gli artisti che andavano alla televisione si vestivano in smoking. Non a caso anche noi dal vivo ci presentiamo con questa foggia.
Quanto tempo ci avete messo a mettere insieme i 13 brani, quali sono state le difficoltà che avete trovato durante la fase di realizzazione dell'album?
La realizzazione del disco ci ha richiesto circa un anno. Oltre ai 13 brani del disco abbiamo dovuto lasciare fuori altri 4 brani già registrati e mixati per evitare che fosse troppo lungo e ripetitivo. Le difficoltà maggiori sono state nel trovare il tempo per le prove in quanto noi lavoriamo ancora alla vecchia con spartiti e lunghe session di prova a ranghi completi. Oltre a questo non abbiamo incontrato grandi difficoltà.
Come vivono gli Ska-J?
Noi viviamo quasi esclusivamente di musica. Ma motivo di orgoglio è di essere tutti Veneziani autoctoni o indigeni e vivere in questa città senza cadere nelle lusinghe dei facili guadagni dovuti al turismo è un vero sforzo. Anche quelli tra noi che non sono veneziani di nascita si sono innamorati della città e del suo modo di vivere e qui sono venuti ad abitare lasciando casa, famiglie e lavoro.
Oggi si può vivere di musica? Se sì, come?
Sì, si può vivere di musica. Basta riuscire a creare una serie di rapporti lavorativi. Io ad esempio sono abituato a fare oltre 100 concerti all'anno. Inoltre nel tempo mi sono creato una mia casa editoriale che mi consente di fare progetti a più lungo termine.
Cosa pensate possa portare la vostra musica nella vita di chi vi ascolta?
Pensiamo che la musica in questo momento debba portare con se un sentimento di allegria e vivacità. La condizione attuale di vita non è delle migliori e noi proviamo a dare 50 minuti di relax ai nostri ascoltatori. Le nostre canzoni e i brani scelti come standard sono fondamentalmente canzoni di amore e di gioia di vivere.
Tre dischi che ritenete necessari e che ci consigliate di acquistare...
Penso che ognuno di noi potrebbe fare la sua lista, nella fattispecie io indicherei: White Album dei Beatles, A Love Supreme di John Coltrane, Nice Guys Art Ensemble of Chicago. Ma tre album sono troppo pochi, così sono costretto a lasciare fuori la musica reggae (Marley, Toots Hibbert...) il funky (uno su tutti the soul brother number 1: James Brown!) la musica classica (soprattutto quella del novecento) e i grandi della musica italiana.
Perchè dovrei comprarmi il vostro disco?
Perché è il più bel disco dell'anno e non può mancare nella vostra discografia!!Non a caso lo sta proponendo la trasmissione di Radio2 Caterpillar e Serena Dandini ci aspetta per una performance live in dicembre a Parla con me!
