La frase di questa settimana è tratta non da un libro ma da un articolo; Ernest Hemingway, futuro Nobel per la letteratura e scrittore davvero sopraffino, negli anni Trenta era corrispondente europeo per Toronto Star, rivista americana.
Accadde che Hemingway, che venne poi ufficialmente bandito dal regime non tanto per i contenuti dei suoi libri e comunque conosciuto per le traduzioni clandestine di "Addio alle Armi" di Fernanda Pivano e Cesare Pavese, partecipò nel 1923 ad una conferenza stampa di Mussolini.
Quando i giornalisti furono ammessi ad entrare nella sala predisposta per l'evento, il Duce era già al suo posto ma così assorto nella lettura di un libro che non si accorse dell'ingresso delle persone. Era chiaramente un atteggiamento studiato che non convinse Hemingway tanto che lo scrittore si spinse fino al tavolo per capire cosa stesse interessando così straordinariamente Benito Mussolini: quando fu abbastanza vicino si accorse che si trattava di un vocabolario Inglese-Italiano e Italiano-Inglese tenuto per di più all'incontrario!
Il giorno seguente i lettori del Toronto Star lessero un articolo che iniziava così: "Mussolini è un bluff, il più grande bluff d'Europa e io ne ho le prove" e risero di questo.
Ecco perchè Hemingway fu messo all'indice dal temibile Ministero della Cultura del ventennio.
