Eventi - Nick The Nightfly e la Montecarlo Nights Orchestra fanno volare gli animi del Blue Note. La settimana scorsa siamo stati per voi a vedere, ma soprattutto a sentire, l’ultima esibizione del dj scozzese nel tempio del jazz meneghino,

e lo spettacolo è stato come sempre all’altezza delle aspettative.
Con l’immancabile borsalino nero, e circondato da ottoni, batteria, basso, chitarra e pianoforte, Nick ha cantato per un’ora e mezza undici canzoni pop e rock tra le più belle di tutti i tempi, riadattandole in stile jazz.
La prima è stata una storica canzone anni ’80, “Du Du Du Da Da Da”, singolo del terzo album dei Police, e The Nightfly, da grande intrattenitore qual è, ha coinvolto tutto il Blue Note con il divertente ritornello.
Il secondo pezzo è tratto dall’album Burnin’ del maestro del reggae Bob Marley, “I Shot the Sheriff” realizzato con un arrangiamento che non ha nulla a che invidiare alla cover di Eric Clapton, con un finale condito da “One Love” fatto a cappella. Ad onor del vero la versione jazz non ha convinto tutti, ma come non poter essere coinvolti dal reggae…
E se fino a quel momento l’atmosfera si stava scaldando, il terzo brano ha messo le molle sotto le sedie di molti presenti.. d’altra parte, trattandosi di “Jump” di Eddie Van Halen come poteva essere altrimenti. Per il quarto brano ci siamo spostati nella New York anni ’70, con “Walk on the wild side”, e poi siamo tornati in “Enghilterra” come dice Nick, per sognare con la magica donna nera di Peter Green e i Fleetwood Mac, divenuta col tempo più celebre per l’interpretazione di Carlos Santana.
La sesta canzone è stata un omaggio al compianto Jako, e sulle note di una jazzissima “Billy Jean”, The Nightfly ha anche accennato a un moonwalk, con tanto di mano sul cappello.
Nick è passato poi ad un repertorio più soft, se mi concedete il termine, trattandosi ancora di un evergreen dei Police “I’ll be watching you”, e dal classico dei classici del rock “Stairway to heaven”, raccontando di quella donna che crede che tutto quello che luccica sia oro.
Per introdurre la canzone successiva l’ormai mattatore della serata ha fatto un excursus storico raccontandoci come nel 1971 i Deep Purple, dalla loro stanza d’albergo, osservavano il Casinò del Montreux Jazz Festival avvolto dalle fiamme, e di come quella luce intensa che si rifletteva nel lago di Ginevra li ispirò per la celebre “Smoke on the water”.
E chi è già stato ad un concerto di Nick The Nightfly con la Montecarlo Nights Orchestra, saprà bene che un brano che gli piace particolarmente eseguire, e mentre lo canta si diverte e diverte il pubblico, è “Can’t buy my love”, suonata con un arrangiamento molto orecchiabile e coinvolgente.
Stavano abbandonando tutti e quattordici il palco, seguiti da caldi applausi, quando una bella ragazza bionda dalla balconata gli ha gridato il titolo della canzone di punta del suo ultimo album, “The Devil”.
Senza farsi troppo pregare hanno rimesso mano agli strumenti, suonato e cantato per gli spettatori, sempre più felici di aver passato un sabato sera al Blue Note, ascoltando della buona musica e bevendo ottimi cocktail.
